About email address tagging
Email address tagging works by adding a recipient delimiter followed by the address tag to your main email address - specifically, just before the domain element of the address. This is shown in the example below:
Exclaimer Address Tagging for Exchange is configured for the following delimiters:
+ (a single plus sign)
-- (two dashes)
If you would like to use alternative delimiters, please contact Exclaimer support.
Address tagging works by checking the recipient address on any received messages, looking for an address tag. This is done by working back from the @ sign in the recipient address; if it finds a recipient delimiter then anything between that and the @ sign is deemed to be an address tag.
By default, any messages sent to an address which includes an address tag are delivered to the recipients main inbox. However, by defining rules in your email client, you can handle messages received for each address tag separately (for example, you might direct them to specified mailboxes or folders, apply flags, etc.).
Example
John Smith's main email address is [email protected]. He creates the following address tags:
-
[email protected] - for use when purchasing from his favorite online bookstore
-
[email protected] - for use when purchasing from his favorite online auction site
-
[email protected] - for use with his social media account
-
[email protected] - for use when signing up to software newsletters
By using address tags at this level, John has great flexibility in how he chooses to manage his email messages using rules in his email client. Moreover, if he starts to receive spam email addressed to a particular address tag, John will know the source and can take appropriate steps to block/filter the messages and report the source for sending spam.
